Out The Door
Wow. I mean, can I just bask in it for a moment? After 18 long months of neuroses, rewrites, and frustration, I’ve finally gotten my M/M ero-rom out the door to the publisher. Why did it take me so long? Damned if I know. Forty thousand words ain’t that much. Although writing three times that many, cutting half, adding half again, developing a convoluted external plot, and then hacking it to bits like Jack Nicholson in The Shining might have something to do with it. I started with a really hawt, smexed-up idea of a fantasy vacation escape from an oppressive and repressive everyday life. What I ended up with was a two-book series featuring a near-future dystopia, the entire city of Chicago being an urban prison zone, and a gay pirate floorshow.
With the help of my erstwhile critique partner (and buttkicking BDSM angel) Roxy, I finally had to face facts that at some point, this story could not be all things at once. And that just because it ate my own brain for the better part of two years, that didn’t mean I had to spend two more agonizing over all the things it wanted to be. So thanks, Rox. I really owe ya, big-time.
This book having been such a struggle, I’m now enjoying a well-deserved two-week break. It’s Giftmas season anyway, so me trying to get any serious work done would be like trying to nail fried eggs to a wall. I’ve been meaning to catch up on all the TV I haven’t been watching, and read a few more books than I have been allowing myself to read lately (O Fictionwise Micropay, how do I love thee!). I’m really liking Fringe on Fox, and admit a brain-candy occasional fascination with NCIS (if only for Abby, the LoliGoth forensic scientist with bad taste in men). And I want to re-watch Firefly (because Jayne Cobb never gets old) and some of my favorite action-adventure movies like The Mummy and Brotherhood of the Wolf. And maybe Cowboy Bebop, too, if I can find it in the incredible mess that is the DVD collection.
